I would use the cross-multiplication method as a last resort since I can't do it mentally while I can with the other three methods which saves time. For the other three methods I don't really have a preference as the method I use usually depends on the expression.
I prefer the cross-multiplication method. I prefer it because it saves time. The other 3 methods need the equation to have a certain expression. However, for cross-multiplication, it does not need to have a certain expression unless the factorized answer is not an integer. Cross-multiplication does not WASTE TIME for me unlike some people. If you actually calculate the possibilities of the answer mentally, it does not waste time. Memorizing formulas is not that good, as we can forget it sometimes AND it does not apply to the expression all the time.
I prefer the taking out the similar variables method. I think that this method is the easiest among the four and the least careless mistake I will make when using it to solve the question. Furthermore, it does not require us to memorise. The other three method like the cross-multiplication, it is quite similar to the trial and error method. When we are given big numbers to solve and the question wants us to use the cross-multiplication method, we will need quite some time to solve before arriving to the answer. Thus using the cross-multiplication method will usually be my last resort. As for the formuale method, it requires us to memorise, which makes me dislikes it. Among all,I think the taking out the similar variables method is the easiest, hence I prefer using it.
Mdm Lim Depending on the question asked. One needs to observe which method to use. Some questions can't use the first three methods, you then need to do cross multiplication
